General Sanskrit Shlokas

Shlokas are verses in poetic form. They are  composed in a specific way, having a specific number of lines, with specific number of words per line.
Usually they are made of quarter-verses of 8 syllables each, or of two half-verses of 16 syllables each.

वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ।
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥

Transliteration

vakratuṇḍa mahākāya sūryakoṭi samaprabha।
nirvighnaṃ kuru me deva sarvakāryeṣu sarvadā॥

Meaning in English:

O’ Ganesha, the Great one who has a curved elephant trunk, a huge body and whose brilliance is equal to millions of Suns, may you always remove obstacles from all my endeavors.

भावार्थ

हे ईश्वर, हाथी के जैसे विशालकाय, (जिसका) तेज सूर्य की सहस्र किरणों के समान है, मेरे सर्व कार्य बिना विघ्न के पूर्ण हो, (ऐसी प्रार्थना करता हूँ)।

Karagre Vasate Lakshmi

कराग्रे वसते लक्ष्मी करमध्ये सरस्वती।
करमूले तु गोविन्दः प्रभाते करदर्शनम्॥

Transliteration

karāgre vasate lakṣmī karamadhye sarasvatī।
karamūle tu govindaḥ prabhāte karadarśanam॥

Meaning in English:

On our Palm, Goddess Lakshmi resides at the top, Goddess Saraswati in the middle and  Lord Govinda at the base. One should look at the palm of one’s hand and pray in the morning.

भावार्थ

हाथ (हथेली) के अग्रभाग में लक्ष्मी निवास करती है, मध्य में सरस्वती और मूलभाग में भगवान गोविंद निवास करते हैं । इसलिए सुबह उठते ही प्रथम अपने हाथ का दर्शन करना चाहिए | (देवताओं का स्मरण करना चाहिए)

शुभं करोति कल्याणम् आरोग्यं धनसम्पदा।
शत्रुबुध्दिविनाशाय दीपज्योतिर् नमोस्तुते॥

Transliteration

 ārogyaṃ dhanasampadā।
śatrubudhdivināśāya dīpajyotir namostute॥

Meaning in English:

I pay my salutation to the light which brings auspiciousness, prosperity, good health, wealth & destroys inimical feelings.

भावार्थ

जो कल्याण करती है, रोगमुक्त रखती है, धनसंपदा देती है, विपरीत बुद्धी का नाश करके सही मार्ग दिखाती है, ऐसी दिव्य ज्योती को मेरा नमस्कार ।

Sanskrit Shlokas

गङ्गे च यमुने चैव गोदावरि सरस्वति।
नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरि जलेस्मिन्सन्निधिं कुरु॥

Transliteration

gaṅge ca yamune caiva godāvari sarasvati।
narmade sindhu kāveri jalesminsannidhiṃ kuru॥

Meaning in English:

O’ Holy rivers, Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, Sindhu, Kaveri ! Please be present in this water that i am bathing in & make it holy.

भावार्थ

स्नानमंत्र – हे गंगा, यमुना, गोदावरी, सरस्वती, नर्मदा, सिन्धु, कावेरी नदियों ! मेरे स्नान करने के इस जल में आप सभी पधारिए।

नमस्ते शारदे देवि काश्मीरपुर-वासिनी

नमस्ते शारदे देवि काश्मीरपुर-वासिनी।
त्वामहं प्रार्थये नित्यं विद्यादानम् प्रदेहि मे॥

Transliteration

namaste śārade devi kāśmīrapura-vāsinī।
tvāmahaṃ prārthaye nityaṃ vidyādānam pradehi me॥

Meaning in English:

O’ Goddess Sharada! Salutations to you! O’ Goddess, one who resides in Kashmir, I pray to you daily, please grant me knowledge.

भावार्थ

हे शारदे! काश्मीरपुर में निवास करने वाली! मैं आपसे नित्य प्रार्थना करता हूँ कि मुझे विद्या का दान दो।

Sanskrit Shlokas

हे जगदीश! कृपामय बन्धो! हे बलधाम! सुधारससिन्धो!
तवपदकमले वयं नमामः। तव शुभनाम सदा गायामः।

Transliteration

he jagadīśa! kṛpāmaya bandho! he baladhāma! sudhārasasindho!
tavapadakamale vayaṃ namāmaḥ। tava śubhanāma sadā gāyāmaḥ।

Meaning in English:

O! Lord of the universe, the benevolent friend!
O! Lord, the abode of strength, the ocean of nectar!
We bow at your lotus feet, we sing your beneficent names.

भावार्थ

हे जगत के स्वामी! कृपालु मित्र! हे शक्ति के आश्रय! अमृत रस के सागर!
आपके चरण कमलों में हम प्रणाम करतें हैं। आपके कल्याणकारी नाम को हम सदा गाते हैं।

Sanskrit Chants

अहिल्या द्रौपदी सीता तारा मन्दोदरी तथा।
पञ्चकन्या स्मरेन्नित्यं महापातकनाशनम्।

Transliteration

ahilyā draupadī sītā tārā mandodarī tathā।
pañcakanyā smarennityaṃ mahāpātakanāśanam।

Meaning in English:

Ahilya (wife of Sage Gautama), Draupadi (wife of Pandavas), Sita (wife of Lord Rama), Tara (wife of King Vali) and Mandodari (wife of Ravana).
Remember these five famous personalities regularly as their character can provide strength for us to get rid of our sins.

भावार्थ

अहिल्या (गौतम ऋषि की पत्नी), द्रौपदी (पांडवों की पत्नी), सीता (श्रीरामचंद्र की पत्नी), तारा (राजा वाली की पत्नी), और मंदोदरी (रावण की पत्नी) इन पाँचों के नित्य स्मरण से महापातक का नाश होता है।

Goddess Saraswati

यया विना जगत्सर्वं मूकं च मुखवत् सदा।
या देवी वागधिष्ठात्री तस्यै वाण्यै नमो नमः॥

Transliteration

yayā vinā jagatsarvaṃ mūkaṃ ca mukhavat sadā।
yā devī vāgadhiṣṭhātrī tasyai vāṇyai namo namaḥ॥

Meaning in English:

Without whom the entire world will be speechless and dumb inspite of having a mouth, O’ Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of Speech, I pray to you.

भावार्थ

जिसके बिना सारा जग मुँह होकर भी सदैव मूक जैसा है, हे वाणी की अधिष्ठात्री देवी सरस्वती, आपको मैं नमन करता / करती हूँ।

Sanskrit Shlokas

सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः। सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः।
सर्वे भद्राणि पश्यन्तु। मा कश्चिद् दुःखभाग्भवेत्।
ओम् शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः।

Transliteration

sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ। sarve santu nirāmayāḥ।
sarve bhadrāṇi paśyantu। mā kaścid duḥkhabhāgbhavet।
om śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ।

Meaning in English:

May everybody be happy. May everybody be free from illness. May everybody see all auspicious things. May no one suffer. Om Shanti (Peace) Shanti (Peace) Shanti (Peace).

भावार्थ

सभी लोग सुखी हो जाएँ। सभी लोग रोगमुक्त रहें। सभी लोग मंगल घटना देखें। कोई दुःख का भागी ना बनें। ओम् शान्ति शान्ति शान्ति।
